THM Clavicula XC MTB Cranks 299g, Front Cockpit 222g

0

THM has reduced the weight of its already lightweight carbon mountain bike crankset by a third – down to 299g for the new Clavicula XC, with a claimed weight of just 299g using an integrated 4-bolt spider. At the same time, THM has a new integrated one-piece Frontal cockpit that will replace your current handlebar and stem with just 222g of German carbon. And since THM is actually part of Schmolke these days, there are also new TLO bars for those looking to shed some weight on the more conventional 2-piece road and gravel bike cockpits…

New THM Clavicula XC 299g MTB crankset

After a few years under 3T ownership where they helped refine the production of Torno cranks, Schmolke purchased THM just over two years ago, weeks before the pandemic hit. Stefan Schmolke tells us it’s been a stressful transition, but both brands have come out of it stronger, being able to share resources and know-how because there wasn’t really as much product overlap as there would be. I expected. Over the past two years the two have supported each other in development, often with Schmolke becoming ultralight and THM becoming more integrated.

But this new update to the Clavicula XC MTB crankset shows that THM is still ready to go crazy…

The new mountain bike cranks eschew the modular spider design of the acclaimed Clavicula M3 MTB crankset and instead adapt the Clavicula SE integrated road spider design to come in at just 299g. It’s 31% lighter than comparable 434g M3 mountain cranks, and even a few grams lighter than the classic road Clavicula, thanks to one less arm.

New THM Clavicula XC MTB crankset, with Carbon-Ti chainring

At first it seemed like an odd choice not to go with a direct mount solution as became popular in the era of 1x chainring drivetrains. But really, THM’s integrated carbon spider is lighter and stiffer than anything you’ll get from DM rings on the market these days, even with four chainring bolts.

The $1300 Clavicula XC cranks feature Boost spacing, 168mm Q-factor, 104mm 4-bolt BCD and are compatible with a minimum 32t chainring. THM offers bottom bracket shells (for an extra €70-110) to fit all common BB standards. Ultralight carbon cranks are available to order now for delivery Fall 2022 in 170, 172.5 and 175mm lengths and designed for the rider/bike/gear up to 110kg/243lbs.

Interestingly, they are rated for X1-X4 mountain biking which covers “light cross-country terrain” all the way to “free ride, heavy terrain” – basically all MTB disciplines except “Downhill, extreme terrain”.

This Carbon-Ti X-Ring EVO compatible 11 or 12 speed ring is not included, but available directly from Carbon-Ti for 70€ and by adding 27-57g (30-38T).

THM Carbones Clavicula SE PM is the lightest power meter crankset in the world

THM Carbones Clavicula SE PM is the lightest power meter crankset in the world

About a year and a half ago, THM launched its €1975 Clavicula SE PM, arguably the world’s lightest power meter crankset at just 320g for compacts, 329g for classic 5-bolt road . The power meter internals add only approximately 27g to the total crankset, while providing +/-2% accuracy of 0-1999W output.

The really interesting part of the story here now… is that the power meter internals are fully compatible with the new Clavicula XC mountain bike crankset. THM is already working on refining the way the power meter turns raw data from the torque sensor into precise power data to transmit to your device, so expect a Clavicula XC PM version in the near future as well.

This is sure to be the lightest MTB power meter crankset when it debuts!

THM Frontale Carbon Road Bike Cockpit 1 Piece

THM Frontale 1 Piece Carbon Road Bike Cockpit Road Bar

On the more integrated side of THM, their new $999 one-piece carbon Frontale road bike cockpit combines a lightweight carbon bar and stem to create a super-lightweight, ultra-stiff setup. Weighing just 222g (42cm wide x 100mm stem), the Frontale allows buyers to choose from 90/100/110mm effective stem lengths, 40/42/44cm bar widths AND customize the desired stem angle.

The standard combo is designed around a -6° stem, but THM adjusts each bar to buyer preference so you get the perfect setup to match the actual steerer tube angle of your head tube – no additional cost !

The bar features a 119mm drop, 77mm reach and a subtle 6° flare at the drops. It gets internal cable routing and a 1 1/8″ clamp, so it will only be fully internal for certain configurations. It also has direct support for a GPS mount in the front under the bar.

Schmolke has also been building carbon bars since 1992, although early on the molding process was a bit more primitive than what we see today. But that was enough for Jan Ullrich and a second place in the Tour de France in 2003, so I guess Stefan Schmolke knew what he was doing back then.

Now the molds are more likely to be machined from large blocks of metal, but inside you still get lightweight carbon bars made in Germany.

Gravelbar TLO

The newest addition to Schmolke’s TLO – The lightest – the family is their new Gravelbar TLO.

Available in 40/42/44cm widths (outside-outside at cowls), the gravel bars achieve a 20° flare in the drops, and another 6° at the ends to exit at 51/53/55cm wide overall – 115mm drop, 75mm reach.

Starting at €495, the Schmolke Gravelbar TLO lets you choose from 3 rider weight classes for the lightest bar, with or without reinforcement to be compatible with clip-on aero bars, a 1K weave or a UD finish , optional internal cable routing, and this standard White edition or stealth Black edition deco (like the road bar below)… up to 555€ depending on the options. Claimed weight for this super gravel bar is only 170-180g.

EVO TLO handlebar

Compare it on the road side to the Roadbar EVO TLO from 495€. The options are pretty much the same for the 40/42/44cm (oo) bars, except these are even stiffer and lighter starting at 135-155g, and can go up to 605€!

EVO SL handlebar

Schmolke TLO ulktralight carbon gravel and road bike bars, road SL

But if your handlebar budget isn’t quite so extravagant, you can get nearly the same weight and stiffness with the more “affordable” Schmolke Roadbar EVO SL. At 165-180g, it’s not much heavier and has all the same features. And its price is a bit lower but still super expensive at 380€.

You will have to decide for yourself where to save your money. If you just bought Schmolke’s new expensive but surprisingly not astronomical 5-6kg complete bike, maybe it makes sense to go to TLO too…
