One of York’s most unusual stores has closed after the business went into liquidation

With its window filled with mannequin heads wearing a variety of eye-catching wigs, Hair Universe was something of a landmark for York shoppers.

But it closed suddenly a few weeks ago – and now the reason has become clear.

She has appointed Leeds-based Martin Halligan as her liquidator.

Documents lodged at Companies House show Hair Universe York Ltd owed £105,325 to creditors, including £7,500 to banks and £1,000 to the tax authorities.

A company’s greatest debt is to its owners. Property company D&M Atherton Ltd owns 5-7 Nessgate, the building from which Hair Universe traded for many years.

D&M Atherton, based at Moor Monkton near York, has two directors, Robert Missin and Janet Hancock. He is due £52,000.

Business loan providers Market Finance and You Lend Ltd owe £10,000 and £9,000 respectively. And he owes York City Council £350 in tariffs.

The sole director of Hair Universe York Ltd, Muhammad Farooq, owes £6,500, according to accounts.

A sign above the Hair Universe storefront read: “Dealers of 100% Human Hair Extensions, Clipin, Pre-Glued Wigs, Ponytails, Hairpieces.”

According to its website, which is still live, Hair Universe “works with the best brands in the industry to help you take care of the condition of your hair and keep it looking its best.

“Whether you’re looking for shampoo, conditioner, styling products, electric stylers, or even hair treatments, you’ll find it all here.”

The building on Nessgate is currently undergoing renovation. But it is not yet known whether a new tenant is imminent.
