There is a lot of maintenance, but it is well worth it for amazing thick locks.
Not all of us are blessed with long, thick, healthy tresses, and we need a little help getting them all done. “because you worth it” moment, especially those of us with thin, lifeless hair (like me).
I first had my hair extensions installed last summer, by the Amazing Hadley at Hershesons in Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge.
He put 18 inch chocolate brown individual bonds of the British extension mark Great lengths in my boring blunt bob and it absolutely transformed me, and from that point on I knew I was hooked.
How individual keratin bonded extensions work is that the bond is wrapped around a small section of supportive hair and secured in place (just from the root) using a machine. Great Lengths application – and one set can last up to five whole months if cared for properly.
I’ve been welcoming them for over six months now, so I’ve learned a thing or two along the way, including lessons on how I should have looked after them better and I don’t. did not!
Here are all of my accomplishments from the past few months – I hope this will help you make a decision if you are considering doing them, or help you if you have already taken the plunge.
They work well with fine hair
This is what shocked me the most. I mentioned before that I have very fine hair, it’s genetic and it’s an absolute nightmare to style – volumizing sprays, powders and OTT brushings are my saving grace.
The hair around my scalp was sometimes so thin that you could see through it, so I was naturally skeptical of getting extensions because I was worried that the ties would be visible, or that it would be really heavy. on my already weak hair, thus causing further damage.
Luckily none of these things were true and Hadley assured me that all extensions, when installed correctly, would be perfectly hidden and not cause any damage.
A week or two later I was already experimenting with Ariana style ponytails and the ties weren’t visible at all, only if I did a half-up style and you looked really close, you might see a few, but it’s inevitable.
It was hard to get used to the heaviness and amount of hair at first and I wasn’t used to having it all there – I certainly rocked it a few times putting a handbag over my shoulder and I was got scared in bed when I thought I felt a spider crawl up my arm. It was just my hair.
You can dye them
Another thing that I never fully understood was if you can dye hair extensions, and with those from Great Lengths – you absolutely can!
All of Great Lengths hair is 100% human and 100% ethical, sourced from temples in India where the hair is voluntarily donated in a religious ritual known as âtonsureâ.
This means that it can be treated in exactly the same way as your own hair, so you are free to style and dye it however you like.
I’m naturally blonde, so six weeks after I had my brown hair extensions my naturally light roots started showing, and I panicked, but luckily my fellow assistant and colourist Hersheson, James was able to fill in my roots and give to my hair a boost – all with my hair extensions still in place!
You can instantly transform your look
As for the color – after a few months of long brown hair, I decided I was missing my blonde locks and within two quick dates I was able to go from a long, brunette to a short blonde, to a long golden blonde. princess hair.
In less than an hour, I got my whole head out of chocolate-colored extensions, and what’s even better is that clients’ old hair doesn’t need to be shed, because all wearers Great Lengths hair extensions now have the option to donate their used extensions to the Little Princess Trust.
It is the only charity dedicated to providing free real hair wigs to boys and girls who have suffered hair loss from alopecia and cancer in the UK and Ireland.
After a few hours with James, taking me from a rich dark brown hue to a golden blonde in ONE date (something that should be applauded in itself, it was a major makeover), I was matched with the colors. before coming back to get the new bundle of hair integrated.
As soon as Hadley put on my new blonde hair, I felt like a new person, all within a week! I had gone for three different shades of light and golden blonde, a few inches taller than my previous locks for that true Disney princess feel.
Once her job was done, I floated out of the living room and onto Knightsbridge High Street, feeling on my way to a glitzy first … roommate.
But I did it with beautiful hair.
They have to be brushed a lot!
Oh, how I wish someone would shout this at me over and over when I got my first plugin load.
I was told not to avoid brushing them, but I usually only brushed mine once a day anyway, so I stuck with that rule. However, this resulted in a few of my extensions at the back of my neck and the back of my head getting a bit tangled.
For starters, I was afraid to run my fingers through my hair properly as I didn’t want to damage the bonds, but this time around I know that it is essential to do so and to brush regularly with a suitable hairbrush. to the extensions to avoid any tangling or matting.
Sleeping with a silk cap helps
Another way to avoid tangles and extend the life of your extensions is to make sure you take good care of them while you are sound asleep.
You should invest in a silk sleeping cap, they are available for under £ 10 on sites like Amazon or eBay and come in a range of styles and sizes.
Using silk pillowcases, braiding your hair, and never falling asleep with wet hair is also essential, as your hair is most vulnerable when wet.
Using the right products is essential
These are pretty standard 101 extensions, but if you’ve done them you MUST be using sulfate-free hair products.
Using ones that contain sulphates (the majority of consumer products) will damage and loosen the links, which means your extensions could slip or fall!
Great Lengths offers their own line of hair care products, all sulfate free and available on their website.
But they don’t even have to be expensive products, you can also buy shampoo and conditioner sets at thrift stores like B&M or Home Bargains for a few pounds.
Washing your hair is a myth
Okay, not exactly, but you certainly don’t need to wash your hair as often as you would without extensions.
With a spray of dry shampoo your hair can hold a curl and stay fresh for about five days, I have tried and tested it myself and trust me when I say it saved me a lot of time for myself. prepare in the morning.
If I curled my hair that day, I twist it into two low buns, put my hair in my silk cap and sleep on it, brush it quickly and a little dry shampoo in the morning and it worked. looks as good as the day before!
