The new skipper has repeatedly expressed his desire for the team to be “calm” under pressure, generously praising his teammates for their poise at Gabba when England retaliated.

Langer, however, is adamant he wants to stay well beyond this summer.

“I never thought otherwise, to be honest. I have been consistent with what I have said for the past four years. I love my job, ”Langer said Thursday, echoing his comments from July.

“The boys are playing well, no doubt about it, they are a great team to be involved in. So nothing has changed from my perspective.”

Langer has confirmed that he wants to remain in charge of the test team and the overstretched teams for the long term, as there has been some debate that the senior coach of the red and white ball teams should be Split. Steve Waugh was among those who urged CA to consider dividing the roles.

CA applauded Langer, now more relaxed with the players, for adjusting his style and said a decision on his future would not be made until this series is over.

Langer’s main assistant, Andrew McDonald, would be the perfect coach if Langer stayed and the roles were shared. McDonald, who listens carefully to the players and has a great rapport, is considered a good leader and also able to guide all three teams.

A test tour of Pakistan is scheduled for early next year – this would be Australia’s first to the region since Mark Taylor took his side there in 1998 – before the contract expires. Langer.

Under Langer, of the top-notch series, the Australians have lost home campaigns twice to India but drew to retain the Ashes in England in 2019. They also reached the Cup semi-finals. of the world to 50 in 2019.

His initial role was to reshuffle the team’s culture and regain the respect of the Australian public following the 2018 balloon tampering scandal, a key plank he performed.

However, his intense, erratic and emotional behavior became a problem for support staff and players, and prompted an emergency meeting called by CA General Manager Nick Hockley and Chairman Earl Eddings with Captains Tim Paine and Aaron Finch and apparent heir Pat Cummins in August. Finch said Langer received “confronted” comments from a detailed review of players and staff at a Gold Coast pre-tour camp.

Eddings was a staunch supporter of Langer but has since quit his post, having lost majority support from state associations. Paine publicly backed Langer after the emergency meeting, but has also been gone since, embroiled in a sexting scandal.

This means that the new Cummins Test skipper will now have a greater contribution to whether Langer is the right person to help guide the next stage of this team’s development, a role that former captains including Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, had on their respective coaches.

As the Australians prepare for Boxing Day’s test, Langer suggested there had been a watering-down in his relationship with the team in terms of how all parties now fully understood their roles, and how all had handled Cummins’ sudden omission from the Adelaide Test because he was close contact from a COVID-positive diner at a local restaurant.

“[I was] not surprised. We’re talking about staying calm. What I like, I think I found out around midnight the other night about Patty Cummins and what was going on, so I really like how… everyone stays calm, knowing the process, everyone. world knows his role on the team, ”said Langer.

“Whether it is all the players, they are clear on their roles, whether it is the coaches or the coaches, everyone is clear in their role; therefore, everyone remains calm. Even during the quarantine period on the Gold Coast we had excellent facilities, everyone remained calm and continued to do what we had to do. It was good to start the series as strong as we did.
